Basically, my business is to make words work for you - to get them to do what you want them to do, whether that's to generate business leads, entertain, communicate information, persuade potential employers to give you an interview, or present your thesis or class assignment with its face washed and its boots polished.

WritingEverything that's written has a job to do.
That job might be to sell widgets, or tell an entertaining story, or persuade someone give you an interview you for a job. Or it might be to give you a place on a course, or come to your concert or exhibition, or give you a grant, etc. My job as a writer is to identify your purpose, take the information you provide me with, and present it in a way that 'works' - that is, does the job you want it to do. Doing the job you want it to do... That's my definition of 'quality'. My goal is to produce quality writing - to make words work for you. |
EditingDevelopmental editing reviews the structure and flow of your writing.
When I'm doing a developmental edit, I'll look at the overall structure of the what you've written and make sure it 'works' as well as it can in doing what you want it to do. Then, I'll send you a report, indicating how it might be rewritten to improve effectiveness. Any rewrites that you subsequently want me to undertake will be charged at my basic writing rate. Line editing looks at the more nitty-gritty stuff: the spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax. When I'm line-editing your writing, I'll go through it line by line with my fine-tooth comb and fix all the spelling and other content errors I come across, using Microsoft Word's 'Track Changes' function, and send you a 'marked-up' copy. This will allow you to see (and accept or reject) the changes I've made. |
ProofreadingProofreading is the final check that's made before you send your writing out into the big wide world, when the document has been written, edited, and is all but ready to go.
At this point, the final copy is carefully read to make sure there aren't any typos or mistakes in the font, layout, spacing, etc. before it's finally uploaded or printed. When I'm proofreading your document, I'll go through the print-ready copy with my fine-tooth comb and mark-up any mistakes I find, using Microsoft Word's 'Track Changes' feature, and provide you with this 'marked-up' copy, plus a 'clean' copy with all the changes applied. I don't do any additional line editing at this stage, since this should already have been done, either by myself or another editor before the proofreading stage. If it hasn't been previously line edited, you might want to hire me to do this first - I might even give you a discount! |
My by-word is quality |
I'm not a 'content mill'. I don't farm jobs out to third party contractors for a pittance and accept shoddy in return. Instead, I offer a personal bespoke service, which tailors the job around your specific needs.
You will always deal directly with me and not through some agency secretary or computer algorithm; every word I craft for you will be crafted by me, with your particular requirements in mind. |
